How Is Steel Grating Made?

Steel grating is widely used in industrial platforms, walkways, drainage trenches and offshore projects, known for high strength, anti-slip performance and long service life. Many customers wonder how this sturdy metal product is manufactured. Let’s take a look at the complete production process of steel grating.

First of all, raw material preparation. We select high-quality carbon steel or stainless steel strips as the base materials. The bearing bars, also called load bars, are the main force-bearing parts, while cross bars connect all bearing bars together. All steel materials will be inspected to guarantee thickness, width and material grade meet customer requirements.T

he second step is cutting. According to customers’ drawing specifications, workers cut bearing bars and cross bars into precise sizes. Length, height and thickness are strictly controlled at this stage to avoid dimensional errors for later assembly.

Then comes the key welding procedure. Most standard steel grating adopts pressure resistance welding. The bearing bars are fixed on the welding machine, and twisted cross bars are pressed into the slots of bearing bars with huge pressure and high temperature. The two parts are fused tightly together. This welding method ensures solid connection, so the grating will not loose under heavy load. For special stainless steel grating, manual welding is available for custom sizes.

After welding, we do trimming and finishing. The rough edges of the welded steel grating will be cut and polished to get neat outer contour. Then surface treatment follows. The most common treatment is hot-dip galvanizing, which can form a protective zinc layer on steel surface. It effectively prevents rust and corrosion, suitable for outdoor, wet and chemical environments. Other options include paint coating or no treatment for indoor dry usage.

Finally, quality inspection and packaging. Every finished steel grating piece will be checked for welding quality, flatness, dimension and galvanizing layer. Unqualified products will be picked out. After inspection, steel gratings are bundled and packed, ready for shipment.
